We live in a world that often cries out for justice, fairness, and getting what we deserve. But when it comes to our relationship with God, we should be eternally grateful that He does not give us what we truly deserve. The Bible is clear that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). What we rightfully deserve because of our sin is separation from God, judgment, and eternal punishment (Romans 6:23). But through Christ, we have been offered something entirely different—grace and mercy.

God Blesses Us by His Mercy and Grace
God’s grace means we receive blessings we do not deserve, while His mercy means we are spared from the punishment we rightfully deserve. If we were to ask God to deal with us according to strict justice, we would face His righteous judgment. But because of His mercy, He offers us forgiveness and eternal life through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ.
“He does not deal with us according to our sins, nor repay us according to our iniquities. For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his steadfast love toward those who fear him; as far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our transgressions from us.” — Psalm 103:10-12 (ESV)
The Importance of Humility in Prayer
In Luke 18, Jesus tells the parable of the Pharisee and the tax collector. The Pharisee, filled with pride, lists all his good deeds, essentially asking God to reward him for his righteousness. The tax collector, however, stands at a distance, not even lifting his eyes to heaven, and says, “God, be merciful to me, a sinner!” (Luke 18:13). Jesus explains that the humble tax collector, not the self-righteous Pharisee, goes home justified. The tax collector didn’t ask for what he deserved—he knew he was guilty. Instead, he pleaded for mercy, and mercy is exactly what he received.
As believers, we should follow the example of the tax collector in humility, always recognizing that we are saved not by our own merit but by God’s grace alone. Every blessing we receive is an outpouring of God’s kindness, not a reward for good behavior. Likewise, every moment we are spared from judgment is a testament to His mercy.
A Humble Heart Produces a Grateful Heart
This truth should cultivate deep gratitude and reverence in our hearts. Rather than asking for fairness or what we deserve, let us ask for mercy and grace, trusting in God’s goodness and His perfect will for our lives. His mercy gives us hope, and His grace transforms our lives into something far more beautiful than we could ever deserve.
Thank God for His Mercy and Grace Toward You
Are there areas in your life where you feel entitled to blessings or rewards? Take a moment to reflect on how God has shown you grace and mercy, even when you didn’t deserve it. How can you respond to His mercy today?
May this be your prayer today: Heavenly Father, thank You for not giving me what I deserve. Instead, You have given me mercy and grace through Your Son, Jesus. Help me to live each day in humble gratitude for Your kindness and to never take for granted the salvation You freely offer. Let me extend grace and mercy to others, just as You have extended them to me. In His name I pray, Amen.
