Understanding Jesus’ Statement
“But the hour is coming, and is now here, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such people to worship Him. God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.”

Jesus’ words to the Samaritan woman at the well are among the most profound teachings on worship in the New Testament. His statement, “worship in spirit and in truth,” points us to the very heart of what God desires from His people. But what does it mean to worship God “in spirit and in truth”?
Worship In Spirit
To worship in spirit means more than merely external or ritualistic expressions. It’s an inward, authentic engagement of the heart and mind with God. True worship springs from the depth of our being, empowered by the Holy Spirit, and is not limited to a physical location or ceremony.
A. W. Tozer wrote, “Worship is to feel in your heart and express in some appropriate manner a humbling but delightful sense of admiring awe and astonished wonder and overpowering love in the presence of that most ancient Mystery, that Majesty which philosophers call the First Cause but which we call Our Father Which Are in Heaven.”
Worship In Truth
To worship “in truth” is to worship God as He truly is, according to His self-revelation in Scripture. It means aligning our understanding and attitudes with the truth of God’s character, His Word, and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Jesus Himself is “the way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6).
Worship that is not anchored to God’s truth can easily drift into emotionalism or even idolatry. As John Stott reminded us: “All worship is an intelligent and loving response to the revelation of God, because it is the adoration of His Name.”
How Spirit and Truth Relate to Each Other

- Is there a sense of joy, reverence, and transformation as I worship?
Paul’s exhortation in Romans 12:1 helps us assess true worship:
“I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.”
True worship means dedicating every part of our lives—our thoughts, feelings, and actions—to God. This requires placing Him above all else, giving Him the highest priority in our decisions, relationships, and daily living. By putting God first, we align our lives with His will and demonstrate genuine devotion.
How Can We Improve Our Worship?
- Seek the Holy Spirit — Ask God for a deeper awareness of His presence and for the Spirit’s help to worship wholeheartedly (Ephesians 5:18-19).
- Ground Yourself in God’s Word — Saturate your worship with Scripture, singing, and meditating upon biblical truths.
- Confess and Repent — Keep a short account with God; let your worship flow from a pure heart (Psalm 51:17). In the same way, seek forgiveness and extend grace in your relationships with others.
- Engage Fully — Participate actively—not just outwardly—whether singing, praying, or listening. Let worship move both mind and heart.
- Pursue God Beyond the Service — Remember, worship is not just for Sundays or church gatherings. Our daily lives can be acts of worship (Colossians 3:17). Spend intentional time each day in prayer, gratitude, or reflection, aligning your thoughts and actions with God’s purpose, even in mundane tasks like work, relationships, or helping others.
As Charles Spurgeon once said:
“God has a spiritual house and a spiritual priesthood and He requires of us that we should offer spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God by Jesus Christ.”
