> Few works of Christian literature have captured the imagination—and the soul—like C.S. Lewis’ The Screwtape Letters. First published in 1942, this remarkable book offers a uniquely satirical and profoundly thought-provoking exploration of faith, temptation, and the human experience, all from an unlikely point of view: a seasoned demon writing advice letters to his apprentice nephew. In his wit and wisdom, Lewis reminds us that the Christian journey is filled with both trials and opportunities for growth. One theme that surfaces repeatedly—not only in his work but throughout Scripture—are the importance of self-examination and knowing for certain that we truly belong to Christ.

Why Examine Ourselves?
The Apostle Paul writes, “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!” (2 Corinthians 13:5, ESV). Self-examination isn’t about doubting salvation or living in fear, but rather, cultivating an honest and ongoing relationship with Christ. It is an invitation to bring our hearts before God in humility, inviting Him to search and know us (Psalm 139:23-24).
Ways to Examine Ourselves in Light of Christ
1. Do I Have Faith in Christ Alone?
Salvation is not based on our good works or heritage but on faith in Jesus Christ. “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God” (Ephesians 2:8-9). Ask yourself—am I trusting in Jesus as my Savior and Lord, or in something else?
2. Is There Evidence of New Life?
True faith produces change—however slowly it may appear. The presence of spiritual fruit (like love, kindness, patience) is a mark of genuine faith. Jesus said, “By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples” (John 15:8). Are you seeing any signs of transformation, however small?
3. Do I Love Others Like Christ?
A telltale sign of belonging to Christ is love for God and people. “We know that we have passed out of death into life, because we love the brothers” (1 John 3:14). Self-examination asks: Is sacrificial love increasing in my life?
4. Do I Sense the Spirit’s Work in Me?
The Holy Spirit convicts, corrects, comforts, and guides us. Scripture assures, “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God” (Romans 8:16). Do you sense His gentle leading, even when you stray?
5. Am I Growing in Repentance and Holiness?
Even Screwtape laments when his “patient” begins to confess and repent! Christians are not perfect, but we’re marked by a willingness to turn from sin and pursue God’s ways. “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9).
Encouragement for the Journey
If as you examine yourself you see weakness, failure, or doubts—take heart! Assurance isn’t found in perfection, but in continually running to Christ. Our faith may be weak, but our Savior is strong. Jesus said, “Whoever comes to me I will never cast out” (John 6:37).
C.S. Lewis reminds us, through the convoluted schemes of Screwtape, that the enemy delights in uncertainty and despair. But God invites us into confidence and hope, grounded in His finished work. Let us examine ourselves, not to earn salvation but to rejoice in it—knowing that eternal life is not about the strength of our hold on Christ, but the strength of His hold on us.
“Now to him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you blameless before the presence of his glory with great joy…” (Jude 1:24). Amen.
