How to Avoid the Trap of Spiritual Sleep

Enchanted ground

> In The Pilgrim’s Progress, John Bunyan portrays the Christian life as a pilgrimage filled with both visible trials and subtle dangers. Some threats come in the form of persecution, fear, or suffering. Others are quieter and harder to detect. The Enchanted Ground is one of those dangers. In this part of Christian’s journey, Bunyan teaches us a sobering lesson: spiritual drowsiness and complacency are constant dangers for every believer.

The Danger of Spiritual Drowsiness

As Christian and Hopeful continue their journey toward the Celestial City, they come to a place called the Enchanted Ground. This was dangerous not because of violence or open attack, but because it made travelers sleepy. If they gave in to sleep there, they would be in grave danger. Knowing this, the pilgrims worked hard to stay awake. They kept moving, talked together, and stirred one another up so they would not drift into spiritual slumber.

This scene is especially striking because the danger seemed gentle. There were no roaring lions or threatening enemies in sight. The temptation was simply to rest, to relax, and to stop being watchful. Bunyan shows us that some of the greatest spiritual threats do not come with drama. They come quietly, through weariness, passivity, and neglect.

Press Forward: Avoid Becoming Too Comfortable and Careless

The lesson of the Enchanted Ground is clear: believers must guard against spiritual drowsiness and complacency. It is possible to be on the right road and still become dull in heart. We may not openly reject Christ, yet we can slowly lose alertness, neglect prayer, drift from God’s Word, and become comfortable in a sleepy faith.

Spiritual sleep often begins subtly. A little carelessness, a little prayerlessness, a little love for comfort, and the soul begins to grow heavy. We stop pressing forward with joy. We become less serious about holiness. We lose urgency in our devotion. Bunyan reminds us that this kind of drift is dangerous. The Christian life requires watchfulness, endurance, and active faith.

Christian and Hopeful resisted sleep by speaking with one another. Their fellowship became a means of grace. This is a powerful reminder that God often keeps His people awake through mutual encouragement, honest conversation, and shared perseverance.

The Call to Live Soberly, Intentionally, and Watchful

Scripture repeatedly warns believers to stay awake spiritually. The call to watchfulness is not rooted in fear alone, but in the nearness, power, and faithfulness of God.

“Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:6

This verse reminds us that spiritual alertness is part of faithful Christian living. We are not called to drift through the journey, but to live soberly, intentionally, and awake to the things of God.

Another encouraging promise comes from Romans:

“The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.”
— Romans 13:12

God not only warns us to awaken; He gives us reason to do so. The day is at hand. Christ is coming. Our hope is real, and the Lord supplies what we need to persevere.

Staying Awake When it Would be Easier to Drift

Christian and Hopeful did not surrender to the sleep of the Enchanted Ground. By staying watchful and encouraging one another, they passed through safely and continued on their way. Their victory was not flashy, but it was vital. They endured a danger that could have overtaken them precisely because they recognized it and resisted it.

Their progress reminds us that perseverance often looks like simple faithfulness. It looks like staying awake when it would be easier to drift. It looks like continuing in truth when the heart feels tired. It looks like walking on, one step at a time, with eyes fixed on the City ahead.

Avoid the Temptation to Become Passive and Complacent

The Enchanted Ground speaks clearly to modern believers. We live in a world full of distractions, comforts, entertainment, and spiritual dullness. It is easy to become passive in our faith. We may still attend church, say the right things, and appear steady outwardly, while inwardly becoming sleepy and complacent.

This passage calls us to examine our hearts. Are we alert in prayer? Are we feeding on Scripture? Are we serious about holiness? Are we helping fellow believers stay awake, or are we drifting along without urgency?

Like Christian and Hopeful, we need intentional habits of wakefulness. We need the Word of God, prayer, Christian fellowship, and regular reminders of eternity. We need to stir up our hearts to remember that this world is not our home and that the journey is not over yet.

A Call for Reflection

Have you grown spiritually drowsy? Have comfort, routine, or distraction weakened your watchfulness? The Enchanted Ground warns us not to take spiritual sleep lightly.

Ask the Lord to awaken your heart again. Return to His Word. Renew your prayer life. Seek fellowship with believers who will strengthen your faith. Refuse the kind of complacency that leaves the soul vulnerable.

The road to the Celestial City requires endurance, but God is faithful. Stay awake. Keep walking. Encourage others. The City is still ahead, and the Lord will help His pilgrims press on.
