“The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned.” — Isaiah 9:2 As we near the final stretch of Advent and approach the sacred celebration of Christmas, it can sometimes feel like we are walking through days filled with hustle and bustle, shadows of uncertainty, and perhaps even moments of fatigue. Yet, it is precisely in these moments that the true essence of Christmas shines brightly—the light of hope in the midst of darkness.

Isaiah 9 speaks profoundly to this experience. The prophet Isaiah, writing in a time of deep turmoil and anticipation, offers a vision of light breaking into a world wrapped in shadows. It is a message tailored for those in need of hope and renewal. The birth of Jesus Christ, the promised Messiah, is that very light.
The people walking in darkness
Isaiah 9:2-7
have seen a great light;
on those living in the land of deep darkness
a light has dawned.
You have enlarged the nation
and increased their joy;
they rejoice before you
as people rejoice at the harvest,
as warriors rejoice
when dividing the plunder.
For as in the day of Midian’s defeat,
you have shattered
the yoke that burdens them,
the bar across their shoulders,
the rod of their oppressor.
Every warrior’s boot used in battle
and every garment rolled in blood
will be destined for burning,
will be fuel for the fire.
For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the greatness of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David’s throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever. The zeal of the Lord Almighty
will accomplish this.
Imagine the scene over two millennia ago: a humble stable, a young couple, and a newborn baby lying in a manger. Despite the seemingly ordinary circumstances, something extraordinary was happening. God was breaking into our world in a tangible, transformative way. The child prophesied to be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, and Prince of Peace had come.
As we light the Advent candles, each flame reminds us of the light that Jesus brings into our lives. His light dispels the darkness of fear, sin, and despair. It guides us, giving direction and purpose. It warms our hearts, offering comfort and peace. During this final week before Christmas, let us take a moment to reflect on where we need His light in our lives.
- Reflect on Your Dark Moments: Where have you felt overwhelmed, discouraged, or lost this past year? Take those moments to the Lord in prayer, asking for His light to shine in those areas.
- Embrace the Promise: Meditate on the names given to Jesus in Isaiah 9:6. How has He been your Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, or Prince of Peace this year? Give thanks for the ways He has shown up in your life.
- Be a Light-Bearer: Consider how you can share the light of Christ with others, especially those who might be experiencing dark times. A kind word, a helpful hand, or a listening ear can make a significant difference.
This week, let’s attune our hearts to recognize the presence of Jesus, the Light of the World. As you go through your daily routines, let the light of hope fill you and guide you, remembering that the light has indeed dawned, and the darkness cannot overcome it.
Prayer:
Heavenly Father, thank You for sending Jesus, the Light of the World, into our dark and weary lives. As we prepare to celebrate His birth, fill our hearts with hope and joy. Shine Your light into the dark areas of our lives and make us instruments of Your love and peace to those around us. May Your light guide us and transform us, leading us closer to You. Amen.
Thought to Ponder:
How can you let the light of Christ shine through you this week, bringing hope to your community and beyond?
