“And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.” — John 1:14 Today, we celebrate the heart of Christmas—the miracle of the Incarnation. On this holy day, more than two thousand years ago, the eternal Word of God took on human flesh and entered our world as a tiny, vulnerable baby. In the hustle and joy of unwrapping gifts, sharing meals, and enjoying festive traditions, let us pause to reflect on the profound mystery and the transformative power of God becoming man.

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
There was a man sent from God whose name was John. He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.
The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him. He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.
The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
John 1:1-14 NIV
The Gospel of John opens with a grandiose declaration: “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God” (John 1:1). This statement not only connects Jesus to the very act of creation but also reveals His divine nature. Yet, the culmination of this divine-almighty identity is found in one of the most astonishing acts of humility and love—God choosing to enter history as a helpless child.
By becoming flesh, Jesus entered fully into the human experience with all its limitations, struggles, and joys. He walked among us, ate with us, laughed and wept with us, and ultimately gave His life for us. The Incarnation shows us that God is not distant; He is Emmanuel—God with us. He fully understands our lives because He lived it. He knew fatigue, sorrow, pain, and joy. Through His life, death, and resurrection, He offers us the hope of eternal life and the unshakeable presence of His love.
Reflect on the Gift of Presence:
- God’s Ultimate Gift: Reflect on the depth of God’s love displayed in the Incarnation. Take a moment to ponder what it means that God would leave the glory of heaven to dwell among us on Earth.
- Embracing His Presence: Jesus didn’t just come to be near us; He came to transform us. How are you experiencing Christ’s presence in your life today? In what ways can you invite Him into the deeper areas of your heart?
- Sharing Presence: Christmas is also a time to, like Jesus, bring light into the darkness around us. How can you be Emmanuel, “God with us,” to someone else? Is there someone who needs your love, your time, or your presence today?
Christmas is more than a celebration; it’s a call to embrace and embody the transformative power of Christ’s presence. As we unbox gifts and gather with loved ones, let us not forget the greatest gift ever given—the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us, full of grace and truth.
Prayer:
Gracious Father, on this Christmas Day, we stand in awe of the miracle of the Incarnation. Thank You for sending Jesus to be with us, to save us, and to reveal Your glory. Help us to open our hearts fully to Him today. Transform us with His presence, filling us with grace and truth. Teach us to carry this gift to others, that they too might come to know the love and light of Christ. In His holy name, Amen.
Thought to Ponder:
As you celebrate today, how can you become more aware of Christ’s presence in your life and share that transforming presence with others?
May your hearts be filled with the wonder and joy of Christ this Christmas and every day. Merry Christmas!
