Comfort in God’s Faithfulness: Finding Rest in the Storm

God's faithfulness

> Welcome back to our 5-part series, exploring the rich themes from the five books of the Psalms and how they apply to everyday life. Inspired by W. Robert Godfrey’s Learning to Love the Psalms, this series traces Rachel’s journey of faith—an ordinary woman navigating the highs and lows of life while growing deeper in her trust in God.

In the first three parts, we saw Rachel grow in confidence in God’s care, commit herself to God’s Kingdom work, and wrestle with a crisis of faith when everything seemed to fall apart. Today, we follow Rachel into a season of healing and restoration as she finds comfort in God’s faithfulness. This chapter of her journey reflects the theme of Book 4 of the Psalms: finding peace by trusting in the eternal, unchanging nature of God, even when life feels unstable.

The Beginning of Restoration

After enduring one of the darkest seasons of her life, Rachel was surprised to find herself in a new chapter—one marked by slow, quiet healing. Her prayer life, once filled with cries of lament, began to shift toward a humble dependence on God’s sovereignty. While she still had unanswered questions, Rachel decided to trust that God had a plan for her life, even if she couldn’t see it clearly yet.

During this period, Rachel was drawn to Psalm 90, a reflection on the eternal nature of God and the fleeting nature of human life. The opening verse reminded her of the vastness of God’s faithfulness:

“Lord, you have been our dwelling place throughout all generations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the whole world, from everlasting to everlasting you are God.” (Psalm 90:1–2, NIV)

The poetic imagery moved her. God—the one who existed before the foundation of the world—was still her dwelling place. Despite her life’s unpredictability, Rachel realized God’s faithfulness hadn’t wavered for even a moment.

Embracing the Mystery of God

One afternoon, as Rachel journaled about this new insight, she was struck by how much healing had already happened deep in her heart. In the midst of her doubts, she had questioned whether God’s promises still held true. Now, she saw that it wasn’t her circumstances that defined God’s character—it was His eternal nature.

Rachel reflected on Psalm 90:12:

“Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom.”

She began to see her time of suffering as part of a larger story—a season that God had used to teach her the wisdom of depending on Him instead of herself. Life was temporary, but God’s faithfulness was eternal. This shifted Rachel’s perspective, helping her to loosen her grip on the need for control and trust more fully in God’s steady hand.

A Glimpse of New Beginnings

Comforted by this truth, Rachel started to step out into her community again. Her small group, which she had joined a few months earlier, became a source of strength. They encouraged her to use her gifts in new ways, whether through prayer ministry, teaching Sunday school, or simply sharing her testimony with those who were struggling.

One evening, Rachel had the opportunity to share her story with a woman at her church who had recently endured the loss of her job and was questioning God’s faithfulness. Rachel spoke honestly about her own doubts and how she had felt like her life was falling apart. But she also shared the slow but sure healing she had experienced as she learned to rest in God’s presence.

She quoted Psalm 90:14 to the woman:

“Satisfy us in the morning with your unfailing love, that we may sing for joy and be glad all our days.”

The woman teared up and thanked Rachel for her vulnerability. Rachel left the conversation humbled and grateful—her season of suffering wasn’t wasted. God was already using it to comfort others.

Comfort in God’s Sovereignty

Rachel’s crisis of faith had forced her to confront one of the deepest challenges of Christian life: How do we trust in God when life feels unstable or even unfair? What she came to understand during this period was that real comfort doesn’t come from having all the answers. It comes from knowing that God is sovereign and sustaining us, even in our weakest moments.

The Psalms reminded her, over and over again, that God’s faithfulness extends across generations. She thought of verses like Psalm 93:2:

“Your throne was established long ago; you are from all eternity.”

God’s throne remains constant even as the circumstances of life shift. This gave Rachel the courage to trust and rest in His faithfulness, knowing she didn’t need to have every detail of her life figured out.

Reflecting on God’s Faithfulness

Rachel’s story is a beautiful example of finding comfort in God during seasons of life that feel out of control. Just as the Psalms in Book 4 teach us to lift our eyes to God’s eternal, unchanging nature, Rachel learned to rest in the comforting truth that God has always been faithful—and always will be.

Here are some truths we can gather from Psalm 90 and other passages in Book 4 of the Psalms:

  • God is our eternal dwelling place. No matter what changes or falls apart in our lives, His presence is a refuge for His people.
  • Life is fleeting, but God’s faithfulness is everlasting. This truth gives us perspective to trust in His plans even when we feel unsure about our own.
  • Real comfort isn’t found in answers, but in God’s unchanging character.

Reflecting on Your Life

Take a moment to reflect on your own life:

  1. Where do you feel like life is unstable or uncertain right now?
  2. How can you find “dwelling” in God’s presence, letting Him be your refuge and comfort?
  3. Spend time in Psalm 90 this week and ask God to anchor your heart in His steady, faithful love.

A Prayer for Comfort

Eternal God, thank You for being my dwelling place through all seasons of life. When everything around me feels unstable, help me to find rest in Your unchanging nature. Teach me to trust in Your sovereignty and to embrace Your eternal perspective for my life. Let Your unfailing love satisfy me, so that I might sing for joy no matter what I face. Amen.

In the next post of this series, Rachel’s journey will lead to a celebration of God’s salvation as she reflects on His goodness and redemption in her life. Join us next time as we close this series with a picture of joy and thanksgiving. Until then, may you find rest in God’s faithfulness.
