The Bondage of Sin and the Glory of God’s Regenerating Grace

God does not leave sinners like us just as we are, but remakes His chosen people into the image of His Son.

The Total Bondage of Sin

From the very moment of Adam’s fall, every human being entered this world under the tyranny of sin. Scripture declares plainly:

“None is righteous, no, not one; no one understands; no one seeks for God.”
Romans 3:10–11 (ESV)

Humanity’s problem is not merely the committing of sinful acts but the very corruption of nature. As Paul writes, “We are by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind” (Ephesians 2:3).

Though mankind retains limited freedom to choose between moral alternatives, that freedom is enslaved to the inclinations of a fallen heart. Martin Luther aptly wrote in The Bondage of the Will:

“Man is like a beast of burden. If God rides him, he wills and goes where God will… If Satan rides him, he wills and goes where Satan will. Nor may he choose which rider he will have.”

This sobering reality reveals that our natural “free will” cannot produce anything truly righteous before God. Only divine grace can liberate the soul from such bondage.

God’s Sovereign Work of Mercy

Romans 9 confronts us with the glorious mystery of divine election and mercy:

“I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion. So then it depends not on human will or exertion, but on God, who has mercy.”
Romans 9:15–16 (ESV)

The regenerating work of God is not a cooperative effort between man and heaven—it is a unilateral act of divine compassion. John Calvin observed:

“Regeneration is not a renewal of part of the man, but of the whole nature; it is a transformation by which God fashions anew the soul in His own image.”

When God breathes life into the spiritually dead heart, the sinner who once resisted Him now gladly submits. The heart of stone becomes a heart of flesh; rebellion gives way to repentance; hostility gives birth to hope.

Faith as the Gift of Grace

In the miracle of regeneration, God not only imparts new life but also grants the gift of saving faith.

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”
Ephesians 2:8 (ESV)

This faith, given freely, is also fully effective, drawing the soul irresistibly to Christ. Charles Spurgeon beautifully described it:

“Faith, of itself, is an act of the new-born nature; it is the first evidence of spiritual life. The divine hand has made us live, and we believe.”

True saving faith is not mere intellectual agreement—it is the soul’s delight in the Redeemer. It hungers and thirsts for holiness, flows from love, and demonstrates submission to Jesus’ own words:

“If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
John 14:15 (ESV)

The Golden Chain of Salvation

The God who begins the work of salvation also guarantees its completion. The so-called Golden Chain of Romans 8 affirms the unbreakable continuity of God’s saving purpose:

“For those whom He foreknew He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son… and those whom He justified He also glorified.”
Romans 8:29–30 (ESV)

This divine sequence—from foreknowledge to glorification—ensures that not one of God’s chosen will ever be lost. J.I. Packer summarized this truth succinctly:

“Those whom God has bound to Himself by His love He will never let go.”

Such assurance is not a license for complacency but a foundation for worship. Knowing that preservation is God’s work alone fills the redeemed with gratitude and compels a life of holiness sustained by grace.

A Response of Praise and Love

When we understand the depth of our sin and the magnitude of His mercy, every boast is silenced except in the cross of Christ. Grace humbles us to the dust, yet lifts us into the heights of joy.

“To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood… to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever.”
Revelation 1:5–6 (KJV)

Our hearts overflow with love and gratitude toward the One who called us, redeemed us, keeps us, and will glorify us.

“To the praise of His glorious grace, with which He has blessed us in the Beloved.”
Ephesians 1:6 (ESV)

Closing Reflection

Oh, the wonder of sovereign grace!
That God would look upon sinners, not with wrath, but with unmerited favor; that He would regenerate our hearts, grant us faith, and preserve us for glory—this is mercy beyond measure.

Therefore, let our lips never cease to praise Him.
Let our hearts ever burn with love for Him.
Let our lives reflect His holiness until the day faith becomes sight.

Soli Deo Gloria — To God alone be the glory.
