> In a world that often celebrates self-promotion and personal achievement, the Christian virtue of humility stands out as a counter-cultural beacon. Humility, in its essence, is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less, and instead focusing on God and others. One of the most profound examples of humility in the Bible is found in the life of Moses.
Moses: A Portrait of Humility
Moses, a man chosen by God to lead the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt, is described in Numbers 12:3 as “very meek, above all the men which were upon the face of the earth.” This statement comes at a time when Moses faced criticism and challenge from his own siblings, Aaron and Miriam. Despite his close relationship with God and the extraordinary tasks he was chosen to perform, Moses exhibited remarkable humility. He did not boast about his status or retaliate against Aaron and Miriam; instead, he remained silent, allowing God to defend his character and leadership.
This humility was not a sign of weakness but of strength and deep faith. Moses understood that his leadership was not about his own abilities but about God’s power working through him. His life was a testament to the fact that humility involves trusting God and recognizing that every gift and calling comes from Him.
The Challenge of Humility
In a world that often values the loudest voice in the room, choosing the path of humility can be challenging. It requires a conscious decision to put others before ourselves, to listen more than we speak, and to attribute our successes to God’s grace rather than our own efforts. Humility also involves being open to correction and willing to serve others without seeking recognition or reward.
Reflecting on Our Own Character
As we consider the example of Moses, it’s worth reflecting on our own lives and attitudes. Do we seek to serve or to be served? Are we quick to take credit for our successes or to give glory to God? Do we respond with humility when faced with criticism or opposition, trusting God to vindicate us in His time?
A Challenge to Grow
This week, let’s challenge ourselves to take practical steps towards growing in humility. It could be as simple as offering a word of encouragement to someone else, performing an act of service without seeking acknowledgment, or taking time to listen to someone with whom we disagree. Let’s ask God to reveal areas in our lives where pride may be taking hold and to help us respond with humility.
A Prayer for Humility
Dear Lord,
You have shown us through the example of Your servant Moses what true humility looks like. It is not weakness but strength under Your control. It is not thinking less of ourselves but thinking of ourselves less and focusing on You and others. Lord, help us to grow in humility. Teach us to serve without seeking recognition, to listen more than we speak, and to attribute all our successes to Your grace. When we face criticism or opposition, help us to trust in You to defend us in Your timing. May our lives reflect Your love and humility to the world around us.
In Jesus’ name, Amen.
As we embark on this journey of growing in humility, let’s remember that it is a process. We won’t always get it right, but each step taken in humility is a step closer to reflecting the character of Jesus, who “made himself nothing by taking the very nature of a servant” (Philippians 2:7).
How Does this Apply to You?
Do you serve others without seeking recognition, listen more than you speak, and attribute your successes to God’s grace? None us do this naturally. However, with God’s help we can grow into being the humble and meek servants God desires of His children. Will you examine your way of life to spot those areas of humility you need to work on.
Though it’s a slow process, God expects us to make progress in this aspect of our live. Please leave us a reply to share your commitment with us.
