The Roman Road: A Biblical Path to Presenting the Gospel

> The “Roman Road” is a time-tested model for presenting the gospel of Jesus Christ using a series of scriptures from the book of Romans. This method is powerful in its simplicity, providing a clear and straightforward explanation of the good news of salvation through Christ. It systematically outlines the problem of sin, the consequences of sin, God’s provision of salvation through Jesus, and how individuals can respond to the gospel.

Steps Along the Way:

This article will walk through the key verses in Romans used in this model and explain how each step reveals the fullness of the gospel message.

Step 1: The Reality of Sin (Romans 3:23)

“For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”

The journey down the Roman Road begins with the universal problem: sin. Romans 3:23 tells us that every human being has sinned—no one is righteous on their own, and all of humanity falls short of God’s holy standard. This verse emphasizes the fallen state of mankind and sets the stage for understanding the need for salvation.

When sharing the gospel, it’s essential to start here because unless someone understands the reality and severity of sin, they will not grasp why they need a Savior. It is crucial to explain that sin is not just breaking God’s rules but missing the mark of His perfect holiness. We were created for God’s glory, but sin has separated us from Him.

Step 2: The Consequences of Sin (Romans 6:23)

“For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

Sin carries a penalty. Romans 6:23 teaches us that the wages (or payment) of sin is death. This death is not merely physical but spiritual, leading to eternal separation from God. Without intervention, we are on a path to eternal death because of our sin. However, this verse also introduces the good news: God offers us a gift—eternal life through Jesus Christ.

This verse contrasts the justice we deserve for our sin with the mercy God extends through Christ. The “wages” are something earned, but the “free gift” is something we cannot earn. Jesus’ death and resurrection make this gift possible, offering a way out of spiritual death and into eternal life with God.

Step 3: The Love of God (Romans 5:8)

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”

Romans 5:8 shows that God’s love is not conditional upon our righteousness. While we were still sinners—actively opposed to God—Christ died for us. His sacrifice was not based on our worthiness, but on His grace and love. He took upon Himself the punishment that we deserved.

This verse highlights the central theme of the gospel: Jesus, the sinless Son of God, took our place on the cross. His death was the ultimate demonstration of God’s love and mercy, bridging the gap between sinful humanity and a holy God.

Step 4: The Way of Salvation (Romans 10:9-10)

“If you declare with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.”

Romans 10:9-10 explains the response God requires for salvation. It is not enough to simply acknowledge Christ intellectually; true faith involves believing in His resurrection and confessing Him as Lord. Declaring that “Jesus is Lord” means surrendering to His authority and acknowledging Him as the ruler of your life.

Belief in the heart leads to justification—being declared righteous before God. Confessing with the mouth brings salvation. This passage highlights the personal and relational nature of the gospel, inviting individuals to enter into a saving relationship with Christ by faith.

Step 5: The Assurance of Salvation (Romans 10:13)

“For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

Romans 10:13 offers a wonderful promise: salvation is available to everyone who calls upon the name of the Lord. There are no special qualifications, and it is not limited to a specific group of people. Anyone, regardless of their past sins or current situation, can be saved by turning to Jesus in faith.

This verse provides assurance and hope. It reminds us that the gospel is inclusive—God’s mercy is available to all who are willing to repent and believe.

Sharing the Roman Road

The Roman Road is a helpful guide for presenting the gospel, but it’s important to approach each conversation prayerfully and with sensitivity to the person you’re speaking with. When using these scriptures, take the time to explain them clearly, allowing the listener to ask questions and express concerns. God’s Word is powerful, and the Holy Spirit works through it to open hearts.

Here’s a brief way to summarize the Roman Road in conversation:

  • 1. Romans 3:23 – We are all sinners and have fallen short of God’s glory.
  • 2. Romans 6:23 – The consequence of sin is death, but God offers eternal life through Jesus Christ.
  • 3. Romans 5:8 – God showed His love by sending Jesus to die for us while we were still sinners.
  • 4. Romans 10:9-10 – If we confess Jesus as Lord and believe in His resurrection, we will be saved.
  • 5. Romans 10:13 – Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

The Power of the Gospel

The Roman Road is a clear pathway through scripture that leads people to understand their need for a Savior, the provision of salvation in Christ, and how to receive eternal life by faith. This approach centers the gospel on God’s love, mercy, and grace, while also highlighting human responsibility to respond.

As Christians, we are called to be faithful witnesses of the gospel, pointing others to the saving work of Christ. By using the Roman Road, we can confidently share the truth of salvation, trusting that God will use His Word to draw people to Himself.

In sharing this model, remember the words of the Apostle Paul:

“I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes” (Romans 1:16).
