Finding Rest in God
Augustine of Hippo, one of the most influential theologians of the early Church, beautifully captured the essence of our soul’s longing in his famous confession: “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee.” This profound truth reminds us that true peace and rest cannot be found in the things of this world, but only in God Himself. The world offers fleeting comforts and temporary solutions, but it is in God alone that our hearts find their ultimate satisfaction.
“Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me, for I am gentle and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.” —Matthew 11:28-29 (ESV)
The restlessness we experience is a spiritual signal pointing us back to the Creator. When we seek fulfillment in Him, we discover the peace that surpasses all understanding. This peace comes not from the absence of trials but from the presence of God in the midst of them.
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 4:6-7
Trusting in God’s Sovereignty
Charles Spurgeon, known as the “Prince of Preachers,” once said, “God is too good to be unkind, and He is too wise to be mistaken. And when we cannot trace His hand, we must trust His heart.” Spurgeon’s words invite us to lean into the character of God when circumstances seem unclear or overwhelming. In moments of doubt, when God’s plans are hidden from our view, we are called to trust in His goodness and wisdom.
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.” —Proverbs 3:5-6
This trust is not a blind leap into the unknown, but a confident reliance on the known character of God. The Bible is replete with affirmations of God’s faithfulness and goodness. Trusting in God’s sovereignty means believing that He is in control, even when life feels out of control. It means resting in the assurance that God’s plans are for our ultimate good and His glory, even when they differ from our own desires.
“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” —Romans 8:28
God’s Presence in Our Lives
John Piper, a contemporary theologian, emphasizes the joy and satisfaction that comes from delighting in God: “God is most glorified in us when we are most satisfied in Him.” This statement challenges us to find our deepest contentment in God rather than in the temporary pleasures of the world. When we make God our treasure, our lives become a reflection of His glory.
“Whom have I in heaven but you? And there is nothing on earth that I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart may fail, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever.” —Psalm 73:25-26
Piper’s insight points to the reciprocal relationship between glorifying God and finding satisfaction in Him. As we trust God more deeply, we experience a greater measure of His joy and peace. This satisfaction is not dependent on circumstances but on the unchanging nature of God’s presence with us.
“You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.” —Psalm 16:11
The Faithfulness of God’s Provision
Hudson Taylor, a pioneering missionary to China, famously said, “God’s work done in God’s way will never lack God’s supply.” Taylor’s life was a testament to the truth of these words. He faced innumerable challenges in his mission work, but he consistently trusted in God’s provision.
This quote reminds us that when we align our lives with God’s purposes, we can trust that He will provide for every need. God’s resources are limitless, and He delights in providing for His children. Our faith in God’s provision is an acknowledgment of His sovereignty over all things, including our daily needs.
“And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.” —Philippians 4:19
The Transformative Power of Trust
Soren Kierkegaard, the Danish philosopher and theologian, noted that “God creates out of nothing. Wonderful you say. Yes, to be sure, but He does what is still more wonderful: He makes saints out of sinners.” This quote captures the transformative power of God’s grace and the profound work of faith in our lives.
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come.” —2 Corinthians 5:17
Trusting in God is not just about believing that He exists; it’s about allowing His grace to transform us from the inside out. As we place our trust in Him, we are not only saved but also sanctified—made more like Christ. This transformation is a work of the Holy Spirit, who continually draws us closer to God and shapes us into His image.
“And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit.” —2 Corinthians 3:18
Faith in the Face of Uncertainty
Faith and trust in God also empower us to face the uncertainties of life with courage. John MacArthur wisely observed, “The more you focus on yourself, the more distracted you will be from the proper path. The more you know Him and commune with Him, the more the Spirit will make you like Him.” MacArthur’s insight calls us to shift our focus from ourselves to God. In doing so, we find the strength to navigate life’s challenges.
“You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you.” —Isaiah 26:3
When we trust in God, we are freed from the tyranny of our own doubts and fears. Instead of being paralyzed by uncertainty, we are empowered to walk by faith, knowing that God is with us every step of the way. This kind of faith is not passive; it is active and dynamic, continually drawing us closer to God and deeper into His purposes for our lives.
“For we walk by faith, not by sight.” —2 Corinthians 5:7
Conclusion
Faith and trust in God are not just abstract concepts; they are the very foundation of our Christian walk. As we grow in our faith, we learn to rest in God’s presence, trust in His character, and rely on His provision. The journey of faith is one of continual transformation, as we are made more like Christ through the work of the Holy Spirit.
“And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.” —Philippians 1:6
In times of doubt, uncertainty, or difficulty, let us remember the wisdom of those who have gone before us. Let Augustine’s words remind us to find our rest in God; let Spurgeon’s wisdom guide us to trust God’s heart when we cannot see His hand; and let Piper’s insight encourage us to find our deepest satisfaction in God alone. As we place our faith and trust in God, we will experience the peace, joy, and strength that only He can provide.
